Advent means coming – it is a time when we reflect on the implications of Jesus’ birth, and calibrate our lives in light of his second coming. Historically the winter solstice, the darkest time of the year, was chosen to celebrate the coming of the light of the world. But Advent also reminds us that we are still waiting. While light has come, we know that darkness remains, brokenness still permeates our stories, and no amount of Black Friday deals or Christmas goodies can fix it. Yet at Christmas we affirm this “already and not yet” reality and speak to it four words: hope, peace, joy and love. We proclaim and celebrate that they have come and we remind ourselves they are still coming in their fullest measure. May today be a day of hope for you all, Pastor Shawn.
